Kogi state sector command of Federal Road Safety Corps ( FRSC) has said  that all the 16 people killed at the weekend  in a road  accident on Abuja-Geregu-Lokoja highway  have been given a mass burial.

The state FRSC sector commander, Mr Ogochukwu Ugboma  disclosed this to journalists in Lokoja on Monday, saying that the victims were burnt beyond  recognition , a development, he said, that necessitated the mass burial.

Mr Ugboma disclosed further that the gender and the identity of the victims could not be ascertained as a result of the degree of burn the deceased received.

He said the victims were buried in a mass grave at Alewu village on the said highway, adding that the police and environmental officials from the Kogi local government of the state participated in the burial exercise.

Explaining further, he said that 17 persons were involved in the accident which occurred in the night of August 5 at Alewu village on the Abuja-Geregu-Lokoja Highway.

The FRSC boss disclosed further that all the occupants of the two vehicles involved died in the accident, except only one man who received minor injury.

Shedding more light, Ugboma said that the injured victim was later treated at Ideal Hospital, Koton Karfe and has since been discharged.

The Sector Commander said that the two vehicles involved includes a Lagos- Kano bound Toyota Hiace passenger bus with registration number Yobe 11A YB and a private Nissan Xtera Jeep with registration number, Lagos  CV 516 LSD, heading to Benin from Abuja.

The sector commander blamed the drivers of the two vehicles for the accident, saying that the two of them left their  lanes which resulted in a head -on collision.

Meanwhile, he said the daily heavy traffic jam on River Niger bridge between Lokoja and Koton Karfe was due to ‘stop and search’ being carried out by the military Joint Task Force, urging motorists to bear with them for the time being.
